Satisfy their Curiosity with the Truth

From the moment Lucas could talk, he has been asking questions. He wanted to know everything about everything. Still does. "Mommy, talk about trees. Talk about lightening. Talk about mud or firetrucks or freight trains." I was explaining photosynthesis and the definition of nocturnal to my 2 year, because he asked. He is a very bright, very verbal, very cerebral kid. And as he gets older, the questions are not waning. Just getting more complex. "Mommy, who made God? How do people who live in heaven walk on the clouds? Why do some animals eat plants and others eat meat?" And along with being a curious kid, he is also an avid reader. Well, he isn't quite reading alone. But he loves to be read to and to learn what the books say so he can " read" them to himself. When I was first introduced to the Ouestions for Little Hearts books (from author Kathleen Bostrom), I knew they would be a good fit for us. Having lost our first son before Lucas was born, we talk a lot about heaven around here. Lucas knows he has an older brother in heaven and that we will see him again someday. But those discussions themselves lead to lots of other questions about heaven and God and other spiritual matters. These are questions that I love to talk abut with him but I don't always have the answers. And that is exactly why I love these books. The most recent one's we read were "Who Made the World?" and "What is the Bible?" And just like the others in this series that we have loved, these books captivated Lucas' attention and sparked lots of questions. The books always start with a list of questions your toddler may have about the world or the Bible or prayer or heaven. "What was the hardest, and what was most fun? "The planets or the stars or the people- which one? If you had it all to do over again, would you make the world as you did way back them? The second half of the book if written as if God is speaking to your preschooler, directly answering his/her questions. "Nothing was hard; I enjoyed every minute. I love the whole world! I love everything in it! If I could go back, I would not change a thing. But wait till you see what the future will bring!" If your kids are like mine, the poetic answers will be only the beginning of answering the questions. This is when I turn to the last few pages of the book. They break it down page by page and list the scripture reference that backs up the reply. The references for the above quoted passages are: Genesis 1:31 "God looked over all He had made, and he saw that it was very good!" Also, Revelation 4:11 and Revelation 21:1. After reading "Who Made the World?" Lucas and I had a good talk about the creation story and what it means to be part of God's creation. Lucas asked, "If God made the world, then who made God?" Good question, little man. The references in the back of our book list Revelation 22:13, "I am ... the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Not exactly a clear-cut answer, but that is not exactly a clear-cu

Wonderful Introduction to the Word for little Readers

The Little Blessings books by Kathleen Long Bostrom are just that...little blessings. What a joy it is to read these stories to my daughters. I loved the way the prose and rhyming were so poignant yet simplistic enough for little minds to grasp. Each books starts with a list of questions for example? "Who Made the World? God, was it you? Did you have a helper? Did you snap your fingers to make it go fast?" It is written as if the child is asking God all the inquisitive questions. Questions that only a little one can have. The 2nd part of the book are God's answers to the child as in dialogue with the child. "All I can say is that no one made me. I've been here forever and always will be", "How many days did it take me? Just six!" I thoroughly enjoyed the give and take rhythm of the book and the dialogue between the child and the Lord.It made the characters and story real and alive. At the end of each book there is a listing for parents and teachers of the biblical references. This section lists many great verses that will help your child to learn more and understand more of the concepts presented within these books. These are definitely treasures that you will want to save from generation to the next. What Is the Bible? (Little Blessings)

A charming little book

This is the most darling book I have read for children that pertains to God. The illustrations are so precious and sweet. I love how the stories are written at first from a child's perspective with all their typical "Why?" and "How?" questions. The children are curious to know about the Bible and why is it so important to people. In the second part of the book "God" answers those quesions for the children. The story is written as one long poem. It all blends very nicely. The book is geared towards children ages 3-6. A child just starting to read might be able to read parts of the book too since it's written in easy to understand words. This would make a perfect bedtime story or addition to a Sunday School library. Who Made the Earth? is also another charming book from the Little Blessings series.

Love Little Blessings

This August, Tyndale is releasing two more stories in the Little Blessings series by Kathleen Long Bostrom. These two new titles are What is the Bible? and Who Made the World? I've heard people talk of the Bible in church. It seems extra special, so I'm on a search. Who wrote the Bible? One person? A few? What does it say? Can you give me a clue? Is it a book I will need as I grow? Does it tell stories of people I know? This book is divided into three parts. The first part is a question-poem written from a child's perspective. These are simple questions, questions that may be a bit familiar to parents with curious kids with a heart for God. The second part is an answer-poem written from an adult's perspective. The third part is for Bible references. What I love about this last section is that it goes through line-by-line of the answer-poem, and it provides a verse or two to back up the rhyme. The illustrations by Elena Kuchank are traditional and cutesy. The types of illustrations that you might find on greeting cards. One plus to the illustrations is that her illustrations are multicultural.

Delightful way to introduce little ones to God

I've hardly been able to read them for myself to review as my little ones love the adorable, whimsical pictures which is the artwork of Elena Kucharik, creator of Care Bears. This mom loves the wholesome, Biblical stories that can be taught to my children with such ease and understanding. The kids catch on right away to the endearing poetry that they catch on to quickly, and soon, remember it, to help finish the sentences after being read through a few times. What Is the Bible? asks such questions as Who wrote the Bible? and Is it all true? The book starts out with these child-like questions, with easy-to-understand answers filling the rest of the book. "The Bible is special - indeed, have you heard? The Bible is also called God's Holy Word." This 80 paged book is newly published by Tyndale House Publishers and geared for children ages 3-6. The last eight pages are "Bible References" geared toward parents to go further in depth with Scripture references go through with their children in understanding the concepts throughout the book.
