Everyone has seen images of Jesus on the cross. No matter what you believe, what you think about religion, or whether you even want to think about it at all-you have seen them. But do those images matter to you? Have you ever stopped to think about Jesus on the cross-what it means, why He is there, and whether it has anything to do with you? After all, hanging on a cross was a death sentence. The Romans used crucifixion more than two thousand years ago as one of the most brutal forms of capital punishment. It was slow, humiliating, and excruciating. Crucifixion was reserved for criminals-the worst of society. Yet Jesus endured something even more severe. "Finally, Pilate handed Him over to them to be crucified" (John 19:16). And then the real brutality began. How could the God of the entire universe ever be placed in a position like this-and why? As you reflect on your own life, perhaps you feel empty inside. You sense that something is missing, but you can't quite put your finger on it. You wonder: Is this all there is? Is there meaning to life? Is there something better? Why am I here? What is my purpose? If you feel-even slightly-that something is missing, I urge you to keep searching. There are many resources available to help you learn about God. Don't stop searching. I also want to acknowledge something important. Many of us who call ourselves Christians have done a poor job of sharing the gospel-the good news of God. In fact, sometimes we haven't just been bad at it; we've been terrible. You may have witnessed the ugliness that so-called "Christians" sometimes show toward those who don't believe as they do. The truth is, Christians are not as perfect as we often pretend to be. We can be prejudiced, hurtful, unloving, sarcastic, rude, and even cruel. Our zeal can turn into anger, and frustration can take over our conversations. None of this is an excuse-it's simply reality. I know many people have turned away from God because of Christians, and that is deeply unfortunate. If you have ever been hurt by a Christian, please allow me to say this: I am truly sorry. You are not alone. I know many who have been wounded in the same way. Christians know we are sinners. We know we need help. We cannot overcome our flaws on our own. That is where God comes in. Only God can meet us in the mess we have made of our lives. We will never be perfect in this life-but we must keep trying. Growth comes from seeking help, from others and from God Himself. So why should you keep reading? The answer is simple: hope. We all need hope. Hope keeps us moving forward. Hope sustains us when life becomes overwhelming-and it will. Hope gives us peace and the strength to keep going when others tell us to give up. But hope must be placed in something-or Someone. That is why so many people need God. God gives promises we can hold onto. When we place our hope in people, we will eventually be disappointed. No one is perfect. Everyone has flaws. Even the best people will let us down. We need a better source for our hope. This book is written to help you learn more about God and to give you enough understanding to decide whether He is worthy of your trust-whether you can place your hope in Him. Only you can make that decision.
