Book Overview

What is Funny? by Etan Boritzer addresses the subject of sensitivity and awareness in humor. Laughing at others or laughing at oneself, or laughing for no particular reason at all, author Boritzer approaches the various subtleties of this basic human activity asking what is appropriate and what is hurtful, while tackling issues of taunting and teasing, bullying and aggression-issues that are very much in the focus of our nation's schools today. Excellent for moral discussions.

I love these "What is..." books. My grandsons and I have spent at least 30-45 minutes on each book. We don't just read it. We discuss it and applications. I ask them to give me specific circumstances and we discuss what is funny and why, or what is not funny and why. In addition, the book touches on situations that are gray areas. We discuss this also and why they are gray areas; what would make this situation a funny situation and what would make it a not-funny situation. Neither of my grandsons 6 and 8 1/2 wanted to read the book at first. After we finished they both wanted to go on to the next "What is ...?" book. I recommend it to anyone who wants a good stimulus for talking about morals with kids.
