Fortunate Player

I am one of those fortunate players. This is a great read. I can't wait for the next volume. I say that because, though this one is full of great perspective and opportunity to reflect on teachings that the game has to offer that translate outside the white lines, there is a great deal I learned from Coach Doumit in the classroom and on the field for 3 years that is, I am sure, yet to come. It's been 23 years since I shared a field with Coach Doumit (Moses Lake, class of '86), and the things I learned, many included in this book, I still use and teach when I can, in my workplace, my home, and when I am coaching young men. In the classroom, the dugout, the field, the buss rides, and now in print I can see him slapping his hands together, gather his words as he looks down for a second, looking me in the eye and taking me to task to learn something. Thanks Coach!

A Great Gift

Great news! If you weren't one of the fortunate kids who was coached by Pete Doumit you can still reap the benefit of his experience by reading his book. Wheher you read it all at once, in order or in snippets, you'll find good information, humor and sincere encouragement. He includes apt quotations, poems, and some of his original wisdom. (83% of Winner is Inner.) His "Tour of the Bases" gave me a new perspective on how the game is played. The title implies the book is about more than baseball and it is. Doumit's philosophy is inspiring and his writing is elegant. I suggest you read the book then pass it on. It's a gem.
