When young Whalum Broussard is thrown out of his mother's house, shortly after completing high school, he begins to wander the streets, trying to figure out what to do. He begins his life's journey alone, and finds himself at the mercy of older men, some of whom have good intentions for him, and some who do not. After meeting a young man in the park, he moves in with him and begins an abusive relationship, mirroring his childhood. His life spirals downward as he becomes entrapped in his lover's habits. He later finds true love, but throws it all away when he questions his own existence, and becomes a devout Christian. He marries a young woman from the church, but quickly realizes neither his marriage nor his spirituality are fulfilling.
