Birth and Family: Prince John Charles Wright was born on 11 November 1926 in Southern Rhodesia. He was the son of Sir William Charles Wright, 2nd Baronet of Swansea, and Lady Maud Wright (n e Butler).

Education: He attended Umtali Boys' School in Rhodesia, where he developed early leadership qualities. His guardian during his youth was his aunt, Rosanna Blennerhasset, who oversaw his upbringing.

Marriage and Royal Title: In 1946, he married HRH Princess Lizzy, who later ascended as Her Majesty Queen Lizzy. Upon his marriage, he was styled His Royal Highness Prince John Charles Wright, and in 1950, following his father's death, he inherited the title of 3rd Baronet of Swansea.
