Unlike some other companies (which we won't name here), we at The Gordon Wiggins Group want you to become fully versed in our rules, regulations, and corporate culture as quickly as possible. So we've... This description may be from another edition of this product.
For anyone who has ever worked in an office and has had to endure reading their company's employee handbook (AND signing that you do in fact fully UNDERSTAND it), this book takes an amusing perspective of what you REALLY want to know about your new employer. I enjoyed the creativity and humor the author used in this tell-it-like-it-is approach to the often dry and legally crafted CYA manuals.
The Office meets Mad Men in print

For anyone that's worked in a company and had to put up with the politics, incompetent bosses and goofy colleagues, "Welcome to the Company" will make you laugh--hard. McVety has a quick wit and does an amazing job crystalizing the things we've all thought about work but have never said out loud. As a business school professor, I plan on giving copies to all my graduating students to prepare them for the real world and the Gordon Wiggins' they'll be sure to meet.

"Failure is our last resort" is the motto at The Gordon Wiggins Group, Eileen McVety's fictitious company whose goal is to be the "foremost leader in the fluorocarbon and natural gas industry." McVety sustains this wry, self-effacing tone throughout her book, mocking the pretentiousness of mission statements and corporate double talk. Like many of my favorite books on humor, Welcome to the Company is the kind of book I can enjoy in one sitting, reading cover to cover, and by dipping in at random to uncover a gem such as this: "Please--before hitting SEND, tilt your head and view your emoticon's expression. Does it convey your true intent? Are you defaulting to "smiling guy" when "winking man" is the more accurate representation of your inner self?" Or check out high-achieving CEO Gordon Wiggins himself, lauding his own success: "I started this company nearly 30 years ago with grand dreams and no money. Today, I'm happy to say I've turned all that around." McVety's years of working in corporate settings provide her with a keen insider's view of the nuances of office life. She touches on everything from stress balls to children's drawings push-pinned to cubicle walls. Smart and funny--with insight into fashion and office decor--McVety eschews plaid, Lava lamps, and Duran Duran posters.
The Perfect Office Birthday or Secret Santa Gift

I loved it. The humor is laugh out loud funny and racy but never vulgar. This should be essential reading for anyone who has ever worked in an office. At less than $10, it is the perfect present for a co-worker, friend or family member - but maybe not your boss. :-)
Tells It Like It Is

I found "Welcome to the Company" by Eileen McVety very entertaining. McVety adroitly slices through the company line to show "what it's really like working here". She encourages point-scoring by keeping a copy of WIRED prominently displayed on your desk, but cautions against making the proclamation that you like your coffee black. For a humorous approach, this quick-read should be the definitive primer for all prospective employees
