Webs of our Weaving

By Musette Morell

Among webs strung through shrubs and ti-tree, the laws of life are being questioned. As twilight deepens into night in an Australian garden, Epeira Productus, an intellectually ambitious male spider, challenges the inherited rules that govern mating, mortality, predation and social custom. His rebellion turns a familiar natural order into a searching philosophical conflict: must instinct dictate existence, or can conscious choice create another way to live? Arachne, seeking an identity beyond domestic instinct, becomes Epeira's intellectual and emotional counterpart. Their encounters bring questions of identity and free will into dramatic focus, while the debates among the male spiders test individual purpose against biological destiny. Violence, sacrifice and domination are examined alongside the possibility of moral and imaginative evolution, exposing how inherited behaviour can become coercive authority when custom is treated as unquestionable law. Poetic dialogue and allegorical fantasy transform the nocturnal garden into a setting for ideas that are both intimate and far-reaching. Written as a radio drama, the work relies on voice, argument and image to animate its spider society, moving between the delicacy of woven webs and the severe demands of survival. Its unusual perspective invites reflection on whether transformation can begin within creatures bound by instinct, and what may be risked when established laws are resisted.
