A LibraryReads pick An Indie Next pick A heart-wrenching standalone novel by #1 New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune, We Burned So Bright follows an elder gay couple on an end-of-the-world road-trip.
The road stretched out before them. No other cars, just the headlights on the blacktop. Above, the cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky....
Husbands Don and Rodney have lived a good long life. Together they've experienced the highest highs of love and family, and lows so low that they felt like the end of the world. Now, the world is ending for real. A rogue black hole is coming for Earth and in a month everything and everyone they've ever known will be gone. Suddenly, after 40 years together, Don and Rodney are out of time. They're in a race against the clock to make it from Maine to Washington State to take care of some unfinished business before it's all over. On the road they meet those who refuse to believe death is coming and those who rush to meet it. But there are also people living their final days as best they know how--impromptu weddings, bright burning bonfires, shared meals, and new friends. And as the black hole draws near, among ball lightning and under a cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky, Don and Rodney will look back on their lives and ask if their best was good enough. Is it enough to burn bright if nothing comes from the ashes? This is a beautiful and heartbreaking tale of humanity at its best and worst when it is inevitable to escape the end of the world! And what and ending it is. To have the world swallowed (or stretched) by a traveling black hole, it really gets the point across that you should not put off important things. Though the last road trip of Rodney and Don is certainly memorable and makes for a wonderful story as they meet interesting (and sometimes scary) people, some celebrating the last moments of life around a bonfire and connecting with others, others on the run and denying the inevitability of the black hole in thinking they can find a place to wait out the end, and others going a bit crazy and self destructive but willing to take others out too to spare them the pain. It was all very believable in how people would act in that situation I think.
And don't forget all the emotions! T.J. Klune really knows how to get the reader to feel everything, laugh and cry and sigh. Don and Rodney, as the main characters go through it all, helped by jumps to the past to get the full picture of why they needed this last journey. And yes, the end is so heartbreaking yet beautiful! The title is very apt and I love how it brings up that every human burns bright with our lives and we are stars shining in the dark so that even the end of the world is not the end.
This was an awesome audiobook! The narrator, Kirt Graves, did an excellent job in bringing Don and Rodney and their last trip as the world ends in a spectacular way to life. I laughed, I cried, and loved the whole story! Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for giving me the chance to experience this audiobook!
