Close knit town, so many cracks!

If you want a dark crime thriller, Karen Slaughter has a great success rate for fast paced, enthralling, no holds pulled, a bit graphic stories that grab hold and twist the mind with suspects and secrets that blow open in a nail biting climax. This being the first book in a new series sets that up nicely with the introduction of Emmy and the town of North Falls and the murder of two girls before fast forwarding 12 years to a sort of repeat but more suspects and secrets in this tight woven town that looks suspiciously on newcomers while Cliftons must stay Clifton strong, admitting no weakness, even though they are far from perfect. I really liked that, the good guys are not perfect, they have human flaws and emotions and make mistakes. The main part of the story is a fast paced race to unravel the case of the abduction of Paisley, how it relates to the broken angels case, and if the right murderer had been put away for that crime. There are suspects galore, including the original accused, now out on a technicality, and Emmy and the other officers, along with retired Agent Jude Archer of the FBI (an expert on recovering child abductions) have their hands full for no one is completely innocent in the town of North Falls. It is a gripping police procedural, with family tragedies, and a revealing of all the cracks under that town filled with secrets and lies and dark actions. I sped through this book and while not everyone can be saved, I was hooked. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series, especially if it continues to focus on Emmy and Jude who have quite the complicated bond and backstory. I do wish them the best though and can't wait to see what happens next!
