Jack Fields, a budding anthropologist living on the coast of Ecuador meets a curendero dealing with the visionary medicine ayahuasca. His experience leads him on a journey to the Amazon basin, across the exalted Andean Cordillera, to find the renowned Shuar shaman Emiliano Ts remp. Along the way he encounters an alluring mestiza woman and falls madly in love. A slightly embarrassing and yet humorous medical emergency keeps him from departing, but circumstance compels that he leave everything behind and seek out his fortune beneath the spell of the psychedelic brew.
