The dead don't always rest in peace... Deputy Jason Tate has seen a lot of terrible things in his time, but nothing quite as strange as the case he just picked up. Is it a suicide gone wrong? An accident? Too many things aren't adding up, and some are downright inexplicable. When it gets weird, he calls in psychic/medium Charlie Payne. But weird doesn't begin to cover it when they encounter a dangerous spirit, hell bent on murder. Now they must work together to stop it from claiming another life, or risk becoming its next victims.
Sooo good. This series is definitely dark, but not so much so that I have nightmares or am in a daze all day (I’m an empath and when I am reading a book I tend to “become” the story so much so that I feel I’ve got a blanket of dread over me for the duration of the story if it is a dark and heavy one.) I tend to keep with lighter, happier reads.
I cried toward the end when one of the characters died because I really liked them and had hope for them. It was such a disappointment, but then my ever hopeful spirit fought off the tears and I just knew the character would be ok. Maybe their spirit will show itself to Charlie and therefore never really leave this series. I won’t tell you how everything panned out though. Don’t want to ruin it for you.
If you are looking for a light read this isn’t for you. If you don’t like reading about children’s deaths, this may not be for you - there are a lot of them. However, everything turns out well for everyone in the end and one of the more stubborn characters has a change of heart that makes them more tolerable.
There’s also a new character I can’t wait to get to know in the next books.
Next is Book 3 “Devil’s Snare”.
