The purpose of drafting the original articles in Portuguese that the author wrote throughout 2015 for CeluloseOnline was to analyze some of the processes and problems that are present or often occur in effluent treatment plants. This should permit the diverse topics treated to serve as a starting point and initial orientation for professionals working in WWTPs in the pulp and paper industries. The author hopes that the set of topics addressed in the articles will help the engineers, technicians and operators, both in the offices and in the operational areas of pulp and paper mills. Since the original Portuguese version had some success, a translation into English seemed interesting. Translation by the author also permitted a complete review and reediting. Hopefully, this translated version will be even more useful. The author has worked in the environmental control area for over 40 years. His master's degree in chemistry and more than 24 years of experience and involvement in the main operational problems that occur in effluent treatment plants, make it possible for him to indicate some solutions to topics such as development of projects and operations in effluent treatment plants, activated sludge systems, biological reactors sizing, aeration system basic principles, dimensioning of aeration systems, and diagnosis of operational problems of WWTPs and contributions to the solution of the problems often encountered in WWTPs;Finally, the author can add that this book is a way to continue his work and contribute to projects that strengthen the pulp and paper industry in an environmentally sustainable manner.
