Step-parents happen: the outcome for the new family depends at least in part, as Wells demonstrates, on character and determination. And that's what makes this collection of stories so compelling. Here are stories of women who did the best they could with some remarkably challenging individuals, ranging from the future Queen Elizabeth I to the future John James Audubon. I found that reading about these true heroines helped me see the relationship of stepmother to stepchildren in a much more positive light. I would recommend this charming book to almost anybody facing entering a merged family -- future stepmothers, stepfathers, stepchildren, step-grandparents, and all the other steps.
