After his ill-fated meeting with Dr. Perniferous, Gordon learns that the Isle is only a small part of a vast dreamworld, possessed of kingdoms, histories, horrific monsters, and apocalyptic prophecies, of which he is the central figure. Magical pools bridge mysterious dimensions, and everything is imbued with symbolic meaning. In an effort to circumvent the prophesied dragon attack on the Isle, Gordon and his dog Thelonious embark on a mission to slay the dragon before it comes, using a mysterious Pool to make the crossing into Lowerworld.

Regrettably, the prototype dream machine that Dr. Perniferous and Handly built has unexpectedly merged their unconscious minds with Gordon's. The result is a new, co-created dreamworld reality. Being of sound mental health, Mandy and the doctor's contributions present no problems, but Handly's obsession with all things nerdy has made for some less-than-ideal alterations in the dream.

In the waking world, Annie finds Mandy in a coma and calls on the military experience of an old friend to keep her friend from further harm. Mandy's cousins want her dead and Annie suspects that more than the hospital's estate is at play. A nefarious multinational corporation is backing a secret agenda, and they will stop at nothing to ensure it goes forward as planned.
