This is a story about my service as a radioman aboard an unusual US Navy ship. We sailed in a volatile part of the world of vital importance to the US and its allies as the primary source of the oil needed to fuel their economies. The ship was the USS LaSalle (AGF-3), a converted amphibious landing ship. The place and time were the Middle East of 1975 to 1978, a time when regional wars were either raging or festering and about to erupt. LaSalle was on War Watch -- the eyes and ears of America in the region.
