The Ost Front at the ground level.

This is, so far as I've read, the best book of the Wermacht on the Eastern Front. This book while looking at the actions of the Wermact, focuses more at the tactical level, taking very much into account the critical effects of climate and terrain. Also the use of self propelled artillery and it's successful implementation in conjunction with the infantry and artillery; never really mentioned in the other books that I've read. Finally, after creating Panzer Armies, the Wermacht went into battle with inferior anti-tank guns but more than made up for that defect with the introduction of the Panzerfaust, the Panzerschreck, and the Nebelwerfer. A very detailed read at the tactical level and a very interesting introduction of the use of the different Soviet nationalities employed by the Wermacht, specifically Kalmuck troops who were led not by German Officers, but by their own, only advising at the Regimental or Divisional level and only serving in an administrative or medical capacity at ground level operations. A definite recommendation.

Interesting book...

My favorite part of this book was the chapters detailing the use of self-propelled artillery in many of the battles. You don't find this mentioned in many books but it was very deadly on the Russian attacks. Many of the accounts give you the feeling of what it must have been like to be in the battle. I don't know what book Sergio was reading for his review below but he must have had his own agenda when he read it because I didn't notice any of the drivel that he's ranting about. Read it again Sergio, you missed the part between the front and back cover, lol.

Excellent book on the Eastern Front.

Theis book provides very interesting details on subjects rarely addressed on the Russian Front. I loved it. Much has been written about the tanks and infantry, but theis book teaches about the self propelled artillary, the rockets, staying warm, marching, terrain etc! This book is unashamed to detail the bravery, endurance, guile, skill and professionalism of the brave German soldier and his equally brave Russian foe.His writing style is excellent, the chapters and topics are short and sweet.
