War Dream: First days in country, Running, Jumping, Die'n

I'm sitting in the third jump seat against the bulkhead wall with five other new replacements. The photograph in my shaking hand is of Mary-Ann, a girl I know back at the base. We met shortly after I entered this hellhole. My orders are to join up with First Platoon on the south side of the city, we are expected to advance into position by nightfall. The minute we jump out of the chopper, we are caught up in a firefight. We are taking hits from all directions. The enemy, waiting for us, begins making a sieve out of the chopper's hull. We're in transports, not gunships. This is it? Three lousy days in country. I guess I'm going to buy the farm before I ever hit the ground. What a shitty way to go. The pilot powers up and turns back around to me and one other guy that is left in the chopper, he yells, "Get the hell out!" As we leap off the skid, I realize there's no way he can hesitate or stop. They must take off or lose the chopper, too. As they pull away... we're on our own...the choppers call out our situation, "Hot Zone, Hot Zone!" A War zone is a horrific place to be and some days it's the pits. Your first mission begins with a run for your life, and jumping off the skid of the chopper. You know this is going to be a bad day. The Generals in charge are playing soldier and you must go where they tell you. Jake may be your only chance to make it out alive. The new kid on the block is in for a rude awakening. Growing up in mid-America is nice, but it also shelters you from the big picture. The ways of the world is harsh. No one ever tells you the gruesome horrors of life and death. These lessons must be learned on the battlefield. For the latest Cherry, there will be some tough lessons learned.
