Any of these brides' true stories would make great novels:

A social history of WWII brides - English, Australian, German, Chinese, Italian, et al. The individual stories are very touching and/or eye-opening, and unfortunately all too brief: they make you want to hear more of the womens' own voices. I was amused when one British war bride described her arrival at Grand Central Station, overwhelmed and exhausted and dying for a cup of tea (thinking: authentic English brew, in a teapot) - and was provided with a cup of hot water and a tea bag. (How American!) Alternatively, much less amusingly, there is the story of the German war bride who married an African-American soldier and suffered through the Jim Crow-mindset of the population of 1950's New Jersey. A very good read, very informative about the red tape the brides had to go through, the voyages they made and the prejudice these women experienced. And also informative about the prejudices and mistaken beliefs they had about life in the U.S.A. Sometimes it was they who were in the wrong - life in America wasn't as luxurious as an MGM movie!
