Can a Christian conscientiously take part in modern war, a war that would undoubtedly result in the utter annihilation of tens of thousands of innocent persons - possibly a large part of the entire human race? Many books and pamphlets have been issued on this subject, most of them utopian or idealistic in nature rather than Biblical. It is the Biblical realism of this book that makes it such a deep and prophetic contribution to the subject.
Lasserre's book, written in 1962, provides a thorough and very readable examination of all relevant New Testament passages and possible pro-war arguments. It contains detailed analyses of the sword at Gethsemane, Romans 12-13, the question of taxes to Caesar, Christ's temptations and suffering, etc. Provides a Christian ethic of relating to the state (re: patriotism, etc.). Also includes discussions of the death penalty and the police. This book provides possibly the best and most compelling case for non-violence for evangelicals. A must-read for all who have avoided this issue and want to delve into it.
