Living as a German Jew in Europe during and after World War I, Walter Weissenberg Adams faced the political turmoil and economic crisis of the post-war years while trying to make a name for himself and his business in an environment that was becoming more and more unfriendly to Jews. Feeling increasingly distant from his Jewish upbringing, Walter converted to Christianity and raised his family in the Christian faith, though he could never fully extricate himself from his heritage. Faced with the Nazi takeover in 1933, Walter left for Italy with his family, only to face expulsion in 1939. They escaped to England, where he was interned. But quickly, Walter and his family managed to flee to New York. Walter was German and American, Jewish and Christian, refugee and businessman. He struggled with acceptance and recognition throughout his life, sustaining himself by engaging with the world of literature and ideas. While Walter is my father's story, the narrative will ring true for those who have faced the challenges of belonging to two different worlds. Walter is also a testament to the tragic impact of the Diaspora and Final Solution on family and friends. It is a portrait of a man who was, above all, a survivor.
