By turns and anecdotal and practical, this book tells the tales of the jungle and most of its dark secrets. Armchair travelers and true Indiana Joneses will benefit equally from Coningham's unique expertise on life in one of the most dangerous natural habitats on earth.
If I could, I would give this 4 1/2 stars, but the missing star/half-star is my own fault. I was expecting a book that dealt with someone’s personal experience of walking the exotic and complex Amazon. Initially I was very disappointed to realize that “Walking the Jungle” was a how-to rather than a this-was-my-experience. But as I began reading it, I was impressed by the quality of the writing and thoroughness of its treatment of how to plan and implement such a complex endeavor. I no longer intend to return to the Amazon myself—a gigantic environment difficult for non-natives to experience/explore: my age and energy are no longer up to the challenge. But my limited experience in the Amazon, as well as from traveling to remote locations overall, leads me to praise the quality and thoroughness of this book to plan and execute such an adventure.
