Cute, Humorous Little Book - a review of "Wake Up, Baby!"
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
This is a cute book from Bank Street Ready-to-Read. Bank Street's Level One books are meant to be used as a Read-aloud and so are not given one of standardized leveling numbers. In the story Kate, her mother, and the baby are planning to go to the beach as soon as the baby wakes from it's nap. [The babe's gender is not given.] Kate, of course, is a little impatient to get going. To combat her agitation, she goes to her room where she begins to wonder whether her toys could wake the baby if they came to life. After that, troops of elephants, clowns and cowboys, etc. try, but can't succeed in waking the baby. After each attempt, Kate asks her mom if the baby is awake yet, and Kate's mom always comes back with a refrain that even "x" couldn't wake the baby. In the end the baby wakes, but when mom and baby go upstairs to get Kate, she has fallen asleep. Four Stars. Cute Read-aloud. Humorous story. Although not meant for a reader my just turned 7 y.o. and even my 5 y.o. can read it. Special 'Primer' Notes: Text has plenty of repetition to help emergent readers. But it also has dialog and contractions, which can throw off some newer readers. Vocabulary includes words like: wish, would, bet, could, wake, baby, elephants, herd, marching, band, five-alarm, couldn't, giddyup, wild, horses, and circus.
