Wakaonei Mwana Mudiki: "What Did You See, Little Child"

By Leora Machiya

Wakaonei Mwana Mudiki - What Did You See, Little Child?

A powerful African memoir about childhood emotional wounds, family silence, resilience, and breaking generational cycles.

Leora's story is the story of a little girl who learned too early that pain could be dismissed, that hard work could be expected without comfort, and that children were often seen but not always heard.

Growing up in a traditional African home, Leora carried responsibilities far beyond her years. She cooked for large families, worked through pain, learned to remain silent, and searched for safety in the one place that gave her hope - school. But the deeper struggle was not only physical labour. It was the emotional burden of being unheard, unseen, and taught that questioning adults was wrong.

As she becomes a woman, wife, mother, and survivor of profound loss, Leora begins to see the patterns that shaped her life: family control, hidden emotional debts, silence across generations, and the painful cost of carrying wounds that were never named.

This moving memoir explores:
