Waiting for Trains is the first published collection of poems from Susanne Garnett. Though she has spent much of her working life as a charity manager and grants assessor, these verses do not reflect the international outlook of her previous book, The Back of the Bus, which is an autobiographical account of meeting exceptional people all over the world, often in the direst of circumstances. These are quieter, more personal reflections, verses on family, forebears, friends, and the British countryside. Many of them also reflect on what it means to be female in patriarchal and misogynistic societies, (i.e. everywhere on earth) especially for those women who love women, a voice far too long submerged within main-stream literature. Trained as a historian, the author pushes back against the male-centric, top-down view of past events. Some of the poems, too, are mini short-stories, reflecting her tendency to merge fact and fiction, in her mind, and on paper. In this chaotic and critical time, perhaps this is one way to deal with the challenges which face us all. The book is dedicated to the women of Afghanistan.
