What woman hasn't fantasized about galloping off into the sunset with a cowboy like the Marlboro Man? In Sybil Raney's engaging novel, Waiting for Thunder, Ann MacMann does just that when she gives up the glitter of her life, career, and rich fianc in L.A. to start a dude ranch with Thunder, the cowboy she meets on a fateful trip home to the favorite place of her youth, the Texas Hill Country, where Ann buys the Shooting Star Ranch. But, instead of the blissful ride into the sunset with Thunder that Ann had imagined, she's bucked into a wild ride of unforeseen trials, tribulations, and town secrets. When fantasy meets reality, Ann and Thunder struggle with their differences to keep their love and dream of the ranch alive with the help, and hindrance, of the colorful inhabitants of Dry Creek. Written with wit and authenticity, Waiting for Thunder is a funny, poignant, and original romantic page-turner with heart.
At a merely cursory glance, Waiting for Thunder might seem like your average romance / western, but do not do yourself the disservice and write it off as such. Ms. Raney's novel runs circles around old cliches and conventions, and her characters arise as both fallible and believable. Her pacing is suberb; the novel never drags and always feels fresh, as she weaves mystery, romance and more seamlessly. The imagery is both profound and rewarding; Waiting for Thunder is a book that could read at lightning speed but deserves to be read slowly and with care - or twice. Clearly, Ms. Raney did not throw together a typical steamy romance, but rather took a great deal of time and effort to carefully construct a novel that would do her subject matter justice, and she does so suberbly. She makes clever and poignant statements about the dark underbelly of southern small town life and not in a way that feels stale in the slightest. At the same time, she illustrates the positive aspects of such a life, hand-in-hand with the negative so that the entire story feels just like reality. Do yourself a favor and read Waiting for Thunder. Once you get into it, after the first 50 - 100 pages or so, the novel really ripens and becomes more than you could imagine.

This was an extremely entertaining book that really drew me right into the story. The characters were very well defined. The author clearly knew the people and the place about which she was writing. I would recommend it to everyone...Texans and non-Texans...for a sliver of life that most of us will never get a glimpse of.
Amazing Read!

I bought this book on a whim and I'm so glad I did. The author infuses such humor, emotion, and even realism into the story that you can't help but to be drawn into the world of Ann McMann and Thunder. These are just a few of the many, many reasons that Waiting for Thunder is easily one of my favorite books this year.

I loved this book. As someone who has lived in Texas, I can tell you that Raney knows her stuff. The characters are well-drawn and real, and the story is entertaining and well-written. Raney paints a vivid picture of a unique place and the colorful people that live there, and she draws you in with a book that's part adventure story, part love story, and part memoir. It's the stuff of life, and it's great to see it from such an original perspective. If you've ever wanted to leave it all behind to chase your dreams, you'll absolutely love this book. Buy it!!
