Not A Typical Romance Novel

I LOVED this book! "Waitangi Nights" was not at all what I expected it would be, being a romance novel. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that-although there are a few steamy parts-much of the book is quite funny and interesting. The characters were much more realistic than many characters in romance novels tend to be, and drama is not in excess. It is not embarrassing to read because it is not too "mushy." The characters are witty and, sometimes, comically sharp with each other. The two main characters seem to have an entertaining form of "Love-Hate" relationship to start, and the story that goes on behind them is like a mystery. I mean it: the story itself is interesting, not just the love scenes. Sometimes, in between the dialogue as well as within the narration, there are side-comments that say what the character is thinking but won't say-things like, "Oh, yeah right," or, "Well that's just wonderful," etc. "Waitangi Nights" is certainly worth reading for those who are intrigued by the passion of romance novels, but often find them embarrassing.

An exotic, fabulous, and very sexy romance!

All the ingredients are there -- an exotic setting (New Zealand), a feisty heroine, and some of the most deliciously steamy writing I've ever encountered. Alice Gaines has done her research on the topography and customs of 19th-century New Zealand under British rule, and the result is an immediate sense of 'being there' as the story unfolds. Her heroine is no milk-and-water Victorian miss, but an educated, independent, gutsy woman who is nevertheless wholly believable within the context of the story. When she and the hero finally get together. I guarantee the steam will curl your ears. And the wealth of information on orchids is truly wonderful, without getting in the way of the plot. This is a Must-Read for any romance fan
