Aphra Behn, ne Johnston (1640-1689) was a Restoration poet, novelist, playwright, feminist and spy, considered by many to be the first English professional female writer. Unappreciated for years, she is now rightly regarded as a highly talented, innovative and prolific author. Her most famous work is a novel, Oroonoko (1688) which tells the tragic love story of its eponymous hero, an African forced into slavery. Love-Letters Between a Nobleman and His Sister (1683) is an epistolary novel, (the first ever written) and an innovative and pioneering work. Her other works include: The Forced Marriage (1670), The Dutch Lover (1673), The Feigned Courtesans (1679), The Roundheads (1681), The City Heiress (1682) and Poems Upon Several Occasions (1684).
The most extraordinary book on The Spirituals (the root of all African American Music) to date!!! I use it in my courses on Rhythm and Blues and Jazz here at Boston College. It is a required text for my choral group called The Voices of Imani. I recommend it highly!!
A wonderful, readable, touching book

I want to echo the sentiments about this book. It is a delightful book. Art Jones brings a special insight and passion to this work. He is both a highly respected psychologist and also a consummate performer, himself, of the music and it's history. I highly recommend this book.

I used this book as the basis for my History of Gospel Music class here at Western Maryland College and it worked out great. Each chapter is broken down to different emotions, and it even comes with a cassette of songs you can send away for. It's all great.
