The conduct of life depends on voluntary actions, but the trait of being human depends on objective decision-making. In addition, the task to remain objective is not easy and it continues to be a challenge for the humankind. In fact, the people have a unique role in free societies, which is to reflect on issues and ensure a meaningful participation in the political process. The protection of inalienable human rights by a government is not achievable solely by holding elections. Despite the critical role of decision-making in the conduct of life, humanity often fails to make informed judgments. Of course, the rational output of the human mind ought to minimize both conflicts and aggression, and yet human history is replete with events of war and violence. Clearly, personal preferences should not prevail over facts, and yet the human character frequently fails to focus on facts. The United States is a success story in self-government; however, it does require an informed public to fulfill the role of the watchful custodian of sovereign power. Yes, differing opinions will exist in a free society, but the task of dealing with problems must move forward. After all, the human capacity to reflect and choose is the hallmark of our superiority over other life forms. Human emotions can, and do, distort or ignore facts; indeed, the failure to exert composure constitutes the demise of the rational creature. Our only hope is to hold firmly to reason. Let us explore some aspects of life that affect the prosperity of both individuals and society.
