Between 1900 and 1933 Expressionist artists created some of the most dramatic and enduring images of the twentieth century. This volume brings together the thoughts and aspirations of the individuals who brought about this revolutionary epoch in the visual arts. It offers readers the opportunity to engage at firsthand with key writings by the most significant artists of the Expressionist era.
This is a nicely produced title with a broad collection of essays by the artists themselves. There are no photos or diagrams, yet the book adds an invaluable dimension to the study of expressionist art. There are a few 'manifestos' from different periods / 'clubs', but the overall flavor is more of an exuberant celebration of individual exploration. There are a couple of very short dramas, and some fascinating documents and letters detailing the condemnation of the Expressionists as "degenerate" by the Third Reich. Look who's talking ! Highly Recommended Artists/Authors included: Kirchner, Schmidt-Rotluff, Nolde, Kandinsky, Marc, Klee, Macke, Barlach, Kokoschka, Bechmann, Vogeler, Barlach, Kollwitz, Gropius, Pechstein, Meidner, Benn, Berger.
