Voices from the Radar Deck

By: Calloway, Meredith

Picture the Gulf War and you probably picture a fighter jet or a night-vision missile strike. Almost no one pictures a converted airliner flying a slow, ten-hour oval pattern above the desert, its cabin filled with radar consoles and quiet headset chatter. Voices from the Radar Deck tells that overlooked side of Operation Desert Storm: the sustained, human experience of the men and women who trained for, deployed to, and served aboard the E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft that helped coordinate the coalition air campaign.

Told through a set of carefully researched composite characters built from the well-documented general pattern of AWACS training and deployment life, this book follows a crew from the grueling path to becoming a certified weapons director, through the disorienting shock of a sudden overseas deployment, through the long, tense months of Desert Shield, and into the intensity of the war's opening night and the weeks of high-stakes coordination that followed. It also turns to the families who waited at home, the chaplains, flight surgeons, maintenance crews, and intelligence analysts whose quieter contributions made the mission possible, and the strange process of coming home when it was finally over.

This is narrative nonfiction, not a technical manual: vivid, human-scale storytelling grounded throughout in accurate general history. A clear note at the front of the book explains exactly how its composite method works and why it was chosen, so readers always know what they're getting.
