I grew up in Palestine and the United States, two different worlds with a strong connection. Palestinians are constantly killed by American-made weapons that are provided to the Israeli occupation in grants and gifts. Some of the questions I always ask myself are: Why is Israel above international law with American full support? Why do America and most Western countries call for human rights in China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and many more countries but ignore the Israeli violations against Palestinians for 76 years? I thought of two analyses that might explain - but not justify- this American and Western political practice: one is the colonial lens, where Palestine is considered a Western colony, and Israel is a colonizing authority that has one goal to concur land and eliminate population with support from former colonizer Western countries. Second is the Marxist philosophy that suggests capitalism gave birth to imperialism, which necessarily utilized colonialism to keep the "other" countries controlled by the West. While these two analyses are not entirely separate, the difference is in which purpose leads the other. However, in all cases, I recognized that understanding the Palestinian suffering cannot be separated from understanding the more extensive world power structure. (Dirlik, 1997). Inspired by Edward Said's writings, I understand this power structure as material power and an authority to create and control knowledge.
