Vitamin D deficiency is a public health issue. It affects approximately one billion people worldwide, and pregnant women are no exception. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy can lead to an increased incidence of preterm birth, gestational diabetes and hypertension, thereby affecting the course of the pregnancy. At the same time, pre-eclampsia, characterised by high blood pressure and proteinuria, is responsible for 50,000 to 70,000 maternal deaths per year worldwide. Consequently, can vitamin D deficiency increase the risk of developing pre-eclampsia during pregnancy? To answer this question, our dissertation was based on a critical review of four articles, followed by a discussion of the current body of evidence in the scientific literature. Finally, we sought to find a solution to this public health issue by examining current recommendations regarding vitamin D supplementation.
