Visits with Father is a fantasy novel grounded in midwestern, small town reality. It is a novel about teenagers, confronted with life-threatening obstacles, developing the strength and faith they need to persevere. Frankie (Francis) Kennelly, 15 years old, lives in an early 1960s midwestern small town. His father has died in a work accident. However, Frankie's father begins to visit Frankie when Frankie becomes the target of an errant celestial being, Nomed Amay. Frankie's father helps with those encounters and also begins to teach Frankie about death (leaving) and the afterlife (arriving) and the rules of the All-Being that controls the multiverse. After accidentally shooting another teen possessed by Nomed Amay, Frankie is sent to St. Joseph's juvenile rehab center. While there, he and two other residents team up with a priest, a patient at Pines Asylum, and a woman and teenage girl who live at the nearby Native American reservation. What ensues are intensifying battles between Frankie and his allies and Nomed Amay and his Preta (hungry ghosts) and other supernatural beings.
