Writing fantasy for children would appear to be both easier and harder than writing it for adults. Easier in the sense that the imagination of children is less constrained by the experience of life yet harder because the subject matter is more limited due to that lack of experience. The stories in this collection follow that middle ground very well. While all of them are quality stories written at the right level, my favorite is "A Message From Charity" by William Lee. Charity is a young girl in Bay Colony in the extremely hot summer of 1700 and she comes down with an extremely serious fever. Peter Wood lives in the same town in 1965 and also is afflicted with a severe fever. As both of them recover, they find that their minds are linked through time. At first Charity is astonished at what she sees through Peter's eyes but she grows to accept it. The problem arises when Charity tells other people about her linked visions, for it is a time when witchcraft was a dangerous crime. Fortunately, when Charity is brought up on charges Peter relates some historical events that forces the inquisitor to declare that she is not a witch. Simple fantasy is challenging, entertaining and sometimes educational and the stories in this collection manage to do all three.
