Couldn't put it down!

I became engrossed in this book and wanted to spend every minute reading it until I was finished. I thought it was excellent. The writing was great, and the parallel stories of Nigel and Jim were very interesting. I wanted to give it 5 stars for the story and writing, but I had to drop to 4 because of a few editing problems: 1. I found it confusing that there were three characters named Michael. Eventually, you figure out that Nigel's cousin Michael is the same person as Governor Michael Wilson, although their stories in the past and present don't quite mesh. For example, Nigel's tapes never say anything about his cousin becoming governor, do they? And why is Nigel's baby son named Michael, too? I always thought that a reason might come out, but it doesn't. 2. In other "naming" confusion, there is a character whose last name is Jacobson, the same as Jim's, and no connection ever comes out. Were we supposed to suspect a connection? It would have been better if these people didn't have the same last name. Also, Jacobson and Jamison sound too much alike; it would be better if more different names were used to avoid confusion. I loved the story of Beth's faith, and how her quiet kindness had such an effect on others. This book had it all - mystery, drama, love story, tragedy ... it will keep you thinking.

A Novel In the Grand Sense

Slacker reporter, Jim Jacobson, is sent to cover the visit of the mystic-prophet figure, Nigel Fox. Jacobson's skepticism is exceeded only by his self doubt and remorse about his own life and roots. Before the day is over he wil be hurled into an adventure that spans sixty years of history, the events of a world war, a beautiful and ill-fated love affair set in the backdrop of eastern Orthodox spirituality. The book is a novel in the grand sense: a purposeful plot with characters that walk and breathe within the narrative and dialogue. Interwoven elements of Christian mysticism and Biblical prophecy collide with conspiracy and the new technology of the post-war America: televison. Visionary is book about the discovery of faith, recovery of a lost past, and the pains and joys of connections which defy time, space , and logic. It is very much, a novel with multiple layers of connection to the human spirit as it struggles to comprehend the divine. by Randy Maugans [...]

Visionary

Excellent book. Good story. Not a fan of fiction but did not feel this book was a waste of time. Got interesting true historic facts and philosophical food for thought from it.

amazing book!

Visionary by Michael Hallford This is an amazing book! I am not sure how to categorize it, or if it can be. It is a thriller and murder mystery, but also the spiritual journey of a man with no aim of his own. Visionary contains many fascinating themes, including, but not limited to, the origins and power of television, the implications of conspiracy theories, and adoption/reunion issues. And, then, there is the war-time love story of Nigel and Elizabeth. Hallford keeps this intricate novel moving at a brisk pace, from the bucolic farmlands of Wisconsin, through the mayhem of New York City, to the sacred peaks of Mt. Athos, and back again. Nigel's story begins in late 1918 and is revealed to us through cassette recordings he left behind for Jim Jacobson, a small town newspaper reporter. Jim's own journey takes off as he seeks to discover why he has been chosen to be the recipient of these tapes. This book is at once remarkable, edifying, thought provoking, and memorable. I sped through Visionary, eager to learn what happened next in Nigel's odyssey. But by doing so, I realize that I did not savor the many notable passages. There is a saying to the effect that you should not read anything which is not worth reading twice. In fact, this book begs to be read at least twice - the second time immediately following the first. I struggled about giving Visionary five stars only because of editing issues, which will hopefully be fixed in the next printing. In fact, I was so quickly taken up in the story that the errors were only minor distractions at the beginning and appeared to vanish by the end. Although you will want to give Visionary to everyone you know, you will also want to read it again. So, when you buy this book for yourself, order a second copy to give to a friend.
