Seven year old Viola is not yet allowed to attend school. She and her Mum, Virginia, live for free in the apartment of a friend in a "box room" not far from the White House. Mum earns money by "catering" to their "patrons". While taking a break from begging with her mother, Viola talks with children on field trips and discovers that children younger than she already attend school. They also tell her she talks funny and that people who beg aren't good people. Soon, Viola refuses to beg and Virginia is forced to reevaluate their lifestyle. The story provides a timely examination of the complexity of parent-child relationships, poverty and associated feelings of guilt and shame. "Virginia" is the first in a series of three novels featuring strong female protagonists and themes applicable to the challenges of our times.
