In the years following the Civil War, Monument, Wyoming-a once-thriving timber town-has withered into a quiet waystation, passed over in favor of greater ambitions elsewhere. Robert "Teacher" Hess lives a quiet life with his wife, Love. Her brother-and Robert's oldest friend-is Deputy Arnold Harris, a haunted veteran of the war.

Strange acts of violence and unsettling phenomena begin to plague the town, beginning with the tragic death of the town's Sheriff and culminating in a siege by a brutal gang of killers, led by the infamous Delroy "The Hangman" Ironwood.

In the aftermath, a handful of survivors-which include Teacher and Deputy Harris-ride across the plains seeking retribution, led by Harris' former commander: A shadowy Army Colonel with his cadre of veteran sharpshooters.

But what they seek is no longer flesh and blood. Beyond the plains, something ancient waits beneath the sky-where hidden truths will be unearthed, and the fragile seams of sanity begin to fray.
