Bateman was a British horticulturist, landowner, and renowned collector and scholar of orchids. By sponsoring expeditions he helped collectors to acquire rare orchid specimens. Walter Hood Fitch (1817-1892 ), was employed by Bateman to create orchid paintings for the three orchid books that Bateman published.
