Village-Level Land Management and Development Plan in Niger

For more than two decades, Niger has faced a severe decline in its productive potential, resulting in particular from generally unfavorable climatic conditions, significant population growth, and agricultural policies that have remained too sector-specific. This has led to a doubling of cultivated land over the past 25 years, the expansion of croplands into marginal lands in the north, a reduction in grazing areas, the overexploitation of timber resources, near-widespread soil depletion, desertification, and the intensification of social conflicts (between farmers and herders). Currently, the Zorar Chaffa region is facing the degradation of its natural resource potential due to climate hazards and human activity. The direct consequence of these calamities is the onset of accelerated erosion, which degrades the soil by destroying its structure, making it vulnerable to winds and runoff, leading to the formation of gullies on barren slopes, croplands, and pastoral areas.
