Book Overview

""Village Folktales of Ceylon V1"" is a book written by H. Parker that delves into the rich and diverse folklore of Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon). The book is divided into several sections, each containing a collection of traditional tales and legends that have been passed down through generations of Sri Lankan villagers. These tales cover a wide range of themes, including love, betrayal, heroism, and the supernatural. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the cultural beliefs and values of the people of Sri Lanka, as well as their unique storytelling traditions. Through these tales, readers can learn about the history, customs, and beliefs of this beautiful island nation. Overall, ""Village Folktales of Ceylon V1"" is an engaging and informative read for anyone interested in folklore, anthropology, or Sri Lankan culture.1910. Other volumes in this set include ISBN number(s): 0766162273, 0766162281. Volume 1 of 3. The stories found in these volumes are practically literal translations of the written Sinhalese originals. Parker's aim was to present them as nearly as possible in the words in which they are related in the villages of Ceylon. The only liberty of any importance the author took was the insertion of an occasional word or phrase where it was evidently omitted by the narrator, or was necessary in order to elucidate the meaning, or complete the sense. All these tales were collected by Parker, although he only wrote down a very limited number from dictation. All the rest were written for him in Sinalese by the narrators themselves, or by other villagers employed to collect them, who wrote them just as they were dictated. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
