يعيش اسكندر حايك حياة هانئة سعيدة. فهو تاجر أقمشة يسيطر سيّداً مطلقاً على مصنعه وأراضيه وعائلته، بالرغم من الغيوم التي تتكدّس في سماء لبنان في تلك الحقبة من منتصف الستّينّات، وبالرغم أيضاً من المشاجرات المتواصلة بين شقيقته مادو الشكسة وزوجته ماري وابنته الحبيبة كارين. أمّا بالنسبة لخلافته، فالوقت لا يدهم، وسيكون بوسعه حين يحين الموعد أن يختار بين نقولا، الابن البكر الذي لا تساوره أيّ شكوك في الحياة ولا في نفسه حتّى، وحارث، الابن الأصغر المولع بالكتب والمغامرات.جالساً على السطيحة المشمسة في الفيلّا العائليّة، في الموقع الذي يقضي فيه القسم الأكبر من وقته، يخبر الراوي الذي هو سائق اسكندر والمؤتمن على أسراره، زمناً عايشه وراقبه، عصراً ذهبيّاً يبدو كأنّ بريقه لن يخبو. لكنّ صروف الحياة ستبلبل هذا العالم الذي كان الجميع يخاله سيستمرّ إلى ما لا نهاية، وستدفع النساء إلى الواجهة ليتولّين زمام المنزل. وحده حارث بإمكانه مساعدتهنّ، لكنّه بعيد، يجول في أصقاع العالم. Alexander Haik leads a happy and contented life. As a textile merchant, he holds complete control over his factory, lands, and family. Despite the gathering clouds in the sky of Lebanon during the mid-1960s, and the ongoing fights between his sister Mado and his wife Marie, as well as his beloved daughter Karen, Alexander remains unaffected. As for his successor, time is not a concern.
