A multidisciplinary examination of Danish artist Vilhelm Hammersh i's haunting interior paintings
From 1898 to 1909, Danish artist Vilhelm Hammersh i (1864-1916) painted canvas after canvas of his apartment at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen. He ultimately produced about 60 paintings of his home, imbuing each image with a haunting sense of the uncanny. Hammersh i's almost obsessive analysis of his living space raises questions about the notion of home at the turn of the twentieth century. Through conservation and scholarly research, this publication offers new insights on this body of work within Hammersh i's practice.
Vilhelm Hammersh i: Pictures from Home explores Hammersh i's work through multiple disciplines and includes contributions by leading Hammersh i scholars as well as architect Alberto Veiga, author Colm T ib n, artists Ed Ruscha and Marie Herwald Hermann, and composer Nico Muhly.
