"Vigiliae and Notturno" is the seventh volume of the Complete Edition dedicated to Heidegger's "Black Notebooks". It contains "notes form the workshop," as the philosopher calls these entries in three black oilcloth notebooks written between 1952 and 1957. The titles "Vigiliae I and II" and "Notturno" commemorate the night in which the thinker watches attentively to perceive and record what is happening. Thinking focuses on itself while at the same time sensitively registering important events such as the earth orbit of the first Soviet "Sputnik" satellite. The style of the notebooks approaches that "serenity" that plays such an important role in Heidegger's late thought. In this volume, then, Heidegger's thinking and writing is at the height of his mastery.
