The Mahabharata is an ancient Sanskrit epic that tells the story of a war between two cousins of a royal family. The cousins dispute the right to the throne of the kingdom: Dhritarashtra, a blind king of the Kuru clan, wants the entire kingdom to be inherited by his sons, not by his nephews, the Pandavas (the sons of Pandu). The seeds of the war are planted when the Pandavas are cheated in a game of dice and banished for twelve years. When they come back, they attempt to lay claim up to a portion of the kingdom that they had lost in the deceitful gambling, but their bid is flatly rejected. All efforts toward an agreement fail, and war becomes inevitable. This is the attempt of Vidura to counsel Dhritarashtra on the policy of governance, justice and ethical rule.
