INTRODUCTION

1.1 Development of Facial Expression Analysis

Facial expression analysis started in the nineteenth century when Darwin wrote a treatise

that established the general principles of expression and the means of expression in

both humans and animals [44]. He grouped various kinds of expressions into different

categories.

The pioneering work for facial expression analysis was done by [53] by defining six

basic emotions: happy, sad, anger, disgust, fear, and surprise, and their subclassification.

These emotions are well-known and universally accepted.
