The pathos is seen clearly in these women's faces.

The photos of these working women from the mid-nineteenth century are devastating. The narrative is interesting and historical but the faces are those of women either broken or trying to retain something of themselves in an industrialized and patriarchical society and culture which held both women and the working class in disregard or as property. To look into their faces--except for the gymnasts--is truly heart-breaking-even as some of them smile as best they can. This is a powerful presentation.

great pictures

'Victorian Working Women' focuses on the 'eccentric' Arthur Mumby who in the mid to late 1800's 'tried to come to terms with the vast toiling armies of women workers in London... by securing their individual likenesses in words and in photographic portraits, hop[ing] to record them for prosperity." These pictures mainly taken in the late sixties of pit brow girls, servants, acrobats, milkwomen, maids of all work, are extremely touching; I can't part with this book or part with a bit of myself!
