The book tells the story of a British army veteran, Archie Pegg. Pegg is now a serving police officer and nearing retirement. He is undecided as to whether to continue with, or leave the police. He takes some leave, he intends to spend his holiday in the Peak District of Derbyshire. He makes contact with an old army friend, who lives near the Peaks. His former comrade tells him that he is under investigation for war crimes. Whilst assisting the man in clearing his name, Pegg uncovers a web of lies and corruption. He has to take steps which are not entirely legal, to rescue his friend from the clutches of evil men, hell bent on destroying the good reputations of brave men who served their country with honour. In doing so he puts his career on the line, and is very liberty in peril.
