Versaw: Our Family History

The descendants of Jullien Vacherot-dit-Versailles.Long ago, a young soldier came from France to make his home in the New World. He married Angelique Leber, and they settled in a village not far from Montreal. Jullien and Angelique lived their entire married lives there as farmers in LaPrairie County. She bore 14 children, and died giving birth to her last. A few of their children lived, married, and eventually bore 36 grandchildren to Jullien and Angelique. Among their grandchildren was one Jean Baptiste Vachereau-dit-Versailles. His bride, Catherine St. Denys, was only 16. She would bear 16 children over the next 35 years, and live into her eighties there in southern Quebec. Seven of their sons, however, were not content to spend their lives where their forebears had resided for nearly a century. They each ventured across the border into the United States and settled mostly in Michigan. They were among the earliest settlers of the Sodus Township. These seven: Jean Baptiste, Francis, Robert, Luke, Peter, Levi, and Mac, became the heads of seven "tribes" that have by now spread across the entire U.S. and Canada. As the family branched out over the generations, they took the last names Versailles, Versaw and other variants. Meet them all inside this volume.
