Pure Excellence

This book is one of the lost treasures of Black Library Publishing. It has mystery, it has suicidal dwarves who walk around looking like a 1980's Punk and are always looking to get themselves killed fighting the largest thing possible, it has truly disturbing Skaven, it has a plot with dozens of twists and turns, and it has numerous Fu-Manchu references. What more could you possibly ask for in a novel?

Wow, somebody writes skaven scary

I can't disagree with the below review any more strongly. There are two ways to write skaven, there is the William King 'funny' skaven as featured in the excellent Slayers series and then there is the 'scary' skaven. This book has the scary skaven, the humanoid vermin who plot the downfall of humanity without going into excessive comedy territory. Apparently subtlety doesn't work for folks who are looking for a novel that reads like an army list. Gnawlitch Shun, the chief skaven in this book, keeps a few duplicitous henchmen around for the same reason alot of historical despots did: keep your enemies where you can see them. This was brought up several times, with him considering that if he were to kill the grey seer who was having a rough time sabotaging things, the Seerlord might send somebody more competent about it. Besides, even if they don't like him, don't you think the Grey Seers would be obliged to take action if somebody blatantly killed off one of their own? I thought the book read very well. If it had any failings it was not tying up one of the plot threads, though perhaps this was left open for a sequel. A poor representation of the skaven, however, was not a failing of this book. Far, far from it.

4 stars!

My 12 year old son who is obsessed by warhammer loved this book. he recommended it to me,but as i am only the facilitator of warhammer and not an aficionado, i declined. he really enjoyed it though!!
